Boudhanath:
This impressive stupa is one of the most unique landmarks in Nepal and holds great significance as a Buddhist site. With a diameter exceeding 100 metres, it is also among the largest stupas globally. There are various stories about its construction, but it is widely believed to have originated in the 5th century. Stupas typically house sacred relics, and Boudha reportedly preserves the remains of the ancient Buddha Kasyapa. The local Tibetan community in Kathmandu gravitates towards Boudha, engaging in activities like spinning prayer wheels and chanting throughout the day while circling around the stupa. Additionally, surrounding this landmark are six major monasteries along with numerous smaller ones, as well as establishments offering Tibetan carpets and Newari silversmith crafts.
Pashupatinath:
This is the most revered Hindu pilgrimage site in Nepal and a major Shiva site in the Indian subcontinent. Its significance lies in housing the sacred Shiva linga at its main temple, as well as its setting along the banks of the holy Bagmati River, where pilgrims, priests, devotees, temples, ashrams, images, inscriptions and cremation ghats coexist with daily life rituals. Although unclear when it was originally established, there is evidence of an inscription dating back to 477 AD and possibly a shrine existing for a millennium prior.
